Describe your role at Stroma Building Control in a sentence
I promote our Building Control service to our clients, staff and other stakeholders through management, operational and marketing initiatives nationally.
What motivated you to become involved in the Building Control industry?
I started as a Trainee Building Control Officer in Local Government 30 years ago. I was interested in the diversity of the industry and range of projects I could be involved in across many sectors.
What are the challenges facing the construction industry?
Regulation changes are always a challenge for the industry. Guiding your clients through these changes to ensure a positive outcome is an opportunity to promote the skills Building Control professionals have to offer, and the value they bring to projects.
How do you overcome these challenges?
We work closely with our internal delivery teams, technical groups, training academy and wider agencies within our industry to ensure exacting standards are always achieved. By embracing regulatory changes and working with our colleagues in the industry and statutory authorities across the country, we aim to provide a co-ordinated and helpful response to any challenges.
What’s your key focus as a business this year?
We aim to ensure our clients receive a professional and proactive service, and we’re always looking at ways to improve this. Technology is key, along with integrating new methods to ensure our clients continually receive high-standards. Managing risks associated with achieving compliance in consideration of increasingly complex requirements is of paramount importance.
What is it about your role that gives great value to your clients?
The fact we work with clients from early stages of the RIBA scale provides great value as we’re able to fully integrate with their teams from the very start. This allows regulatory issues to be addressed from the outset, whilst engaging with other stakeholders early in the development.
What training opportunities are there available for graduates and other construction professionals who want to develop a career in building control?
This year, the Stroma Training Academy was launched. We’re helping Surveyors and aspiring Building Control professionals achieve CABE chartership. Working with the University College of Estate Management, we’re also excited to announce a new BSc Hons Degree in Building Control.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given and from whom?
My dad said to me when I started my career, “You have two ears and one mouth, so listen twice as hard to people you work with before making decisions.”
Who is your most influential or inspirational professional influence and why?
My very first boss was a great inspiration in ensuring I broaden my outlook and horizons to open new opportunities.
