Achieving Professional Excellence

Over the past year the construction industry has seen radical changes. The results of the Hackitt Review have drastically changed the regulatory and accountability framework of the industry.
A lot has also changed at CABE, with our pursuit of full membership of the Engineering Council and the development of a new strategic journey both of which will lead to greater opportunities for all Members.
We’re excited to be hosting this year’s Annual Conference in Manchester; and welcoming delegates from the UK and Overseas. The theme for this year is ‘Achieving Professional Excellence’ and our speakers epitomise this across many facets of our industry and beyond. Covering a wide range of industry relevant topics from regulatory reform to mental health in construction, along with a detailed technical programme with the aim to promote debate and challenge convention. In this spirit, the conference will feature more live discussions than ever before, ensuring a wide range of voices will be heard.
Our comprehensive exhibition will be populated with a variety of businesses showcasing the most innovative products and services from around the industry. The Built Environment Awards will also be presented at the Conference black-tie gala dinner.

Session One – Regulatory Reform to improve Building Safety (Morning Session)

As Government and industry continue to develop plans to implement the Hackitt Review, the first session of CABE conference will consider key aspects of structural reform including regulatory and systemic changes, improvement to productivity and industry practice and how to develop better skills and training all in the context of building engineers helping to create a safe built environment that protects people throughout the building lifecycle.

Session Two – How Knowledge Base applies in Practice (Afternoon Session)

Building on the morning speakers and discussion, session two will look more closely at the role of standards for products and systems performance in delivering safe buildings, emerging changes to regulatory requirements and process, and consideration of the essential competencies that building engineers need in order to effectively apply their professional skills in practice.

Session Three – Cultural Reform – 09:30-13:00

The final session will look at how the construction and built environment sector needs to change its culture to ensure that buildings respond to societal expectations. This will include consideration of the need to promote better health and welfare within the construction industry; the importance of the role of building engineers in maintaining professional standards and how we can all work to deliver a built environment that works for the widest possible range of people. This session will feature a keynote address from Reverend Kevin Fear.

We are delighted to welcome back Reverend Kevin Fear from 2018’s conference to deliver our keynote address on day two. Kevin received a phenomenal response from last year’s attendees when he delivered his session on Professional Responsibility and Construction Ethics – More than Compliance and we’re sure he will impress again in 2019 as he delivers on Mental Health in Construction – What can we do to Improve it?
