As a Lecturer and Course Director for the HNC Construction course at the College of West Anglia, my main aim, in addition to students’ educational requirements, is to enhance experience, knowledge and understanding of the construction industry.

When I started my career, there was no mention of CPD, and although this is more years than I care to remember, it may have just been the route I started on and the company I was with.

Back then Architectural Technologists, in the company I started in, were not encouraged to join an institution, just to go into an educational route. It was not until I was encouraged to train as a Structural Engineer that I truly understood the importance of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), with a company and professionals that believed in a professional stance in all areas.

westangliaTimes have changed so much, for all branches of construction and, with the emphasis on communication between professionals, it is essential to continue studying and learning especially after completion of our professional qualifications.

I am very pleased to say that due to the proactiveness of David Taylor and CABE members, the opportunities of our students to access CPD events have been massively increased, with a continual flow of CPD dates, comprising excellent presentations, from the Legalities of Planning to the History of Building Control.

In addition to the monthly talks provided, CABE has been involved with the college’s annual CPD all-day event, held in November, providing a full day of valued information from the most current topics and issues to hit the construction industry; for example, Grenfell Tower. The event is extremely popular providing industry speakers with up-to-date knowledge and talks for CABE members, employers, full time students and part time students.

Previous all-day events have boasted participation from 75 employers and industry suppliers, in addition to CABE’s contributions, with a minimum of 55 learners involved not including external visitors.

It is a pleasure to work with CABE, who are just as eager to open the eyes of our future professionals, providing students with a generous free flow of information and access to networking opportunities from all professions.

We look forward to the coming events with enthusiasm and continuing to work with CABE at the College of West Anglia in promoting CPD throughout industry.
