Bournemouth University Film Studio - Site Visit
A final chance for members to view the finished build at Bournemouth University’s (BU) new arts and media centre, including a film studio - a high-tech and forward-looking construction. BU, and the Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) in particular, is now one of the leading arts institutions in the country, famed for the quality of its arts education. The new building will provide a hub for developing talent as part of the university’s expansion plans to double the student intake over the next few years.
Tom Stillman and Ben Heath, two of the project managers for the main contractors Willmot Dixon, welcomed us, and gave us a behind-the-scenes guided tour of this beautiful building. It is steel-framed with concrete-planked and permanent steel shutter floors, with lightweight panel wall cladding externally. Many new construction methods cater for the experimental design features.
An informative and very interesting learning event for the members not tempted away by the weather and the Bournemouth Air Show (although we had a grandstand view from the building’s roof, one of the highest points in Bournemouth now), much enjoyed by all, with many lively questions.
Our thanks to the contractors Willmot Dixon and especially Tom and Ben for their time, just days before the completion handover, and to the site management for their support of this interesting evening. Members have very much enjoyed seeing this innovative and unusual building throughout its development, and to appreciate the support it will give to students’ arts development in the coming years. It has already won a major architectural award but is certainly worthy of industry recognition by the CABE.
