On 06 June 2019 the UK Government published Building a safer future: proposals for reform of the building safety regulatory system, which sets out the next steps in the Government’s response to the tragic events at Grenfell Tower, and recommendations made in Dame Judith Hackitt’s independent review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety.
CABE had issued a survey to members to seek their views on this important Government consultation and were happy to support regions to run their own workshops/events to get more detail on members’ views face to face.
On 17 July, the Southern Region organised such a workshop with Richard Harral, Technical Director of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers, offering the presentation and chairing the workshop session on the questions that were asked within the consultation.
The event was well received by the 45 delegates who attended and there was a good discussion around the questions posed within the consultation.
There were a few concerns around the future role of Building Control and, more importantly, where the competent professional people for these new roles and functions were going to come from.
Our next evening CPD event is in Hillingdon on 18 September, as well as our Regional Conference in Winchester on the same day.
