SYKES PUMPS OFF TO A FLIER AT UTTOXETER
Hire specialist, Sykes Pumps, is helping to ensure that construction goes smoothly on the A50 Growth Corridor scheme outside Uttoxeter. Staffordshire County Council wants to make improvements to the busy A50 trunk road to enhance the transport links between the East and West Midlands.
Sykes Pumps is supplying pumping equipment to remove groundwater generated during excavation works, which has seen 11,000m³ of earth excavated to prepare new bridge foundations. With 4.5 metre-deep excavations needed, the groundwater needed to be removed and returned to the surrounding water courses in a clean, silt-free condition. As a result, Sykes Pumps also supplied silt separation tanks, enabling environmental best practice to be applied on site.

CEMENTING QUEENSFERRY CROSSING’S PLACE IN HISTORY
The Queensferry Crossing, which spans the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland, is set to become the longest three-tower, cable-stayed bridge in the world upon its completion next month. In addition to the three main towers, there are ten concrete piers. These piers support the crossing’s north and south approach viaducts. Acting as a middle material between the crossing’s deck and the piers, and absorbing the gargantuan pressure of both, are PTFE bearing pads. Absolutely critical, these components’ creation required a substance designed to be tougher than concrete. Consultant engineers specified Sika Armorex L2 High Flow grout between the bearing pads and the top of the piers.

UNIVERSITY PROTECTS STUDENTS WITH AICO SMOKE ALARMS
Harper Adams University, Shropshire, has installed Aico’s 160e Series of mains-powered Smoke Alarms into the 27 cottages included in its student accommodation, to increase protection for students. These cottages – each with 4-5 bedrooms – already benefit from Aico Smoke Alarms in the landing and hall, but the university wanted to increase the level of protection without the expense of moving to an LD1 system – the highest protection in Fire Alarm system categories. The solution was to use Aico’s Ei160e Series mains-powered alarms, with ten-year rechargeable Lithium cell back-up with Ei164e Heat Alarms fitted in the kitchens and Ei166e Optical Alarms in the bedrooms and compatible with existing Aico alarms and accessories.
DOMUS VENTILATION MVHR WALL UNITS NOW WITH BLUEBRAIN CONTROL
Following the launch of its ceiling/void mounted HRX-aQ Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) appliances with intelligent air management, Domus Ventilation, part of Polypipe, has introduced this same advanced ‘Bluebrain’ control to its wall mounted MVHR units. The new Domus HRX-D and HRX-2D wall mounted MVHR units intelligently match ventilation rates to the internal environment and occupants’ requirements for maximum homeowner comfort. This is achieved through advanced AMIE (Air Management for Indoor Environments) technology, including features such as digital humidity control, automated summer bypass and accurate system balancing.By accurately measuring air humidity, the HRX-D’s extract speed automatically changes from background to boost as the level of humidity increases, thereby providing optimal ventilation performance.
