CULTURAL CHANGING PLACES
A redevelopment, in Halifax, is delivering first-class facilities, right through to its toilets!
The town’s Square Chapel Arts Centre reaches over 30,000 people a year with shows, events and workshops. Its Grade II listed home for the past 27 years is being redeveloped and extended, so the new Cornerstone building can continue the venue’s prominence in helping make the town one of the fastest growing cultural tourism destinations in England. The scheme includes a new café bar, auditorium incorporating a cinema, foyer and dressing rooms.
Architects, Evans Vettori, and access consultant, Alison Grant, worked in partnership with Clos-o-Mat to also deliver optimum accessibility for visitor and performer personal hygiene.
ABERDEEN ROYAL INFIRMARY DRAINS GET HEALTH BOOST
Lanes Group, along with construction company, NG Bailey, on behalf of main contractor Robertson Group, has carried out a major programme of drainage surveying and cleaning as part of a £38 million refurbishment scheme at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
Drainage engineers from the Lanes Aberdeen depot worked for more than six months on the project, focused on the cleaning of drainage downpipes in the largest building on the Foresterhill Health Campus.
Lanes teams surveyed and cleaned 88 combined foul and rainwater downpipe stacks, with a combined length of 1,500 metres, and surveyed and cleaned 1,000 metres of underground pipework.

LEISURE ACCESSIBILITY EXTENDED
Accessibility to Midlands leisure is being taken to new heights with the opening of a further two assisted, accessible toilet facilities in Leicester.
The city is now perhaps the most accessible in the UK in terms of the toilet facilities – known as Changing Places, it has 15 in the city, with a further seven across the county.
The latest two, again supplied and installed by Britain’s leader in disabled toilet facilities, Clos-o-Mat, on behalf of local contractor, F Stimpson, have been opened at Leicester Leys Leisure Centre and Aylestone Leisure Centre. Each features more space than a conventional wheelchair-accessible toilet, and equipment including a hoist, height-adjustable adult-sized changing bench and a height-adjustable washbasin.
REVOLUTIONARY PRODUCT PROVIDES SMOKE SAFETY
A new product by leading rooflight manufacturer, Xtralite, will deliver huge benefits to the construction industry in terms of smoke ventilation and safety both in new build, retro-fit and restoration projects.
Xtralite has developed an Automatic Opening Vent (AOV) which provides enhanced connectivity and boasts a powerful 24-volt electric motor which effortlessly powers the arms which open the vent. Upon smoke detection, the vent opens automatically through an integrated system, giving users peace of mind.
The product has been tested to EN12101 – 2:2003, a legal requirement under the Construction Products Regulation 2013 and the European standard for smoke and heat control systems and supersedes BS 7346:1991 as the UK’s product standard.

HELIFIX DIXIE MICRO-PILES SUPPORT AWARD WINNING CHELSEA GARDEN
Best Show Garden at the 2017 Chelsea Flower Show was awarded to the M&G Garden, for which Helifix supplied some unseen, but critical, components.
The garden featured monumental blocks of limestone of varying sizes and the two largest stone clad steel towers, at 8m and 5m high, required temporary foundation support.
The Royal Horticultural Society doesn’t allow permanent excavations and tree roots had to be avoided while whatever means of support were used had to be removed after the show.
The ideal solution, overcoming all these potential problems, was provided by Helifix Dixie micro-piles, a technically innovative proprietary system certified by the International Code Council (ICC).
USING INNOVATION TO DELIVER SAFER CONSTRUCTION
Specialist multi-utility and civil engineering contractor, blu-3 (UK) Limited, has invested in a new quick response (QR) code-based identification system to further improve site safety.
Working alongside Olive Media, a leading production organisation, the company has rolled out an innovative solution for checking individual staff competencies on its project sites in real time.

NEW GENERATION ENERGY EFFICIENT STEEL WINDOWS FROM WEST LEIGH
Ideal for new build and renovation projects, where energy efficiency and aesthetics are key, the new W50 TB steel window offers narrow sight lines and a U-value as low as 1.4 W/m2K, depending on the glazing unit employed. The use of the system has been pioneered in the UK by West Leigh (www.westleigh.co.uk), working closely with Swiss designer and supplier, Ottostumm.
It is based on highly engineered, thermally broken steel sections designed to closely replicate the character of the traditional W20 steel window.
The design of the thermally broken profile means that W50 TB steel windows are manufactured differently from traditional solid, hot rolled steel section windows.
