My name is Stewart McArthur. I have been a member since 2001, and I have played an active part in the regional committee for the past ten years, previously standing as Chairman of Scotland Region, and feel I need to promote and develop our links to the wider build environment community. Additionally, I serve on the board as a full member.

As an organisation, we need to develop our involvement with the educational establishments and promote involvement at an earlier career level to allow for new ideas. Recently, I was involved in the trialled use of Skype and e-learning. Both of these areas should be further developed to allow a better dialogue between everyone involved. This would generate better access to our resources for our members and for greater involvement for all.

Recently I have returned to working on the front line where I started, as a project manager with a construction firm. With the benefit of my years of experience, I am able to be bring a greater overview of the built environment as we move forward in 2017 and beyond.

In my 30 years within in the industry I have worked in both the public and private sector, beginning within Building Control/Standards. I also worked within the warranties section for a variety of companies. In this time, I promoted build quality and innovation in both UK and Ireland. This has given me a greater understanding of both fields, how they interconnect and a skill for seeing situations from multiple perspectives.

I graduated with my degree in Fire Risk Engineering from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2000. While I was doing this, I had the opportunity to attend some seminars at Maryland University. During which I had the privilege of being taught by some of the great and good in Fire Engineering while furthering my own understanding of the topic.

In my personal life, I have been married to Alison (almost as long as I have been in the industry) and have two grown children who have flown the nest. They are all supportive of my work, giving me the time to promote the Built Environment and to develop the profile of our Professional Body.

I am also involved in RICS in Scotland and I am the chair for the community council for my local area.

I aim to develop a local profile and learn from our international experience to enhance our profile within UK and Ireland. Along with embracing new technologies and ideas from all members for the benefit of CABE and the greater build environment.
